The Scorecard

We keep all kinds of scorecards. They are important. Progress is not easy to gauge from day to day. We need something external to represent the growth that has been made. Otherwise, we may become discouraged.

However, there’s also a trap.

If we are not careful, we focus too much on the scorecard, on racking up points.

For writers, this might be in the form of word count or pages. Accumulating pages is not difficult. Once we are accustomed to the practice, we can churn them out. If we don’t make the number, we become disappointed, letting self-doubt creep in.

Let the process develop as it will. The only thing in our control is showing up. Some days will be five pages, other days five paragraphs.

Either way, the story is progressing.
