Riding a Bike

My five year old son learned how to ride a bike today without training wheels; it was pure learning. There was never a doubt whether or not he would learn. The only question was when.

Why is it that when we get older we lose such absolute confidence in our abilities to learn? We can do so much given the correct motivation and support.

My son would not have been able to do this on his own. I spent four days with him, holding his back while he gained equilibrium. Letting go was not an option nor was it the goal. Those sessions laid the foundation for what happened today.

We can all learn. The ability is there. Just be forgiving with yourself, have patience, and get ready to fall down — until you don’t.
